Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
