Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
